Here are some questions for you all to discuss amongst yourselves :

How does Williamson use language to create his characters? (look at and use the colloquialisms, slang, swearing and sexist language).

Are all the characters stereotypes?

Why has Williamson created the characters he has in The Removalists?

Challenge question: Imagine you are Ross. Write Ross’ defence of what he has done.

Do not forget to complete the tasks that was set out on Wednesday. I will check it on Monday P1. Please also check the website on The Removlists through Wikipedia on violence and masculinity.

  1. Williamson uses steroetypical characters to convey his characters personalities, intelligence and attitudes. For example, kenny’s foul mouth was purposely used to stereotype the typical australian ‘bogan’, hence giving him a position in the play.

  2. 1. Williamson uses very explicit characters to represent the type of living environment they live in, the language is a reflection of the way they live, so in order to show their lifestyles willaimson, must give his characters a real “yobbo” look, by incorporating slang, jargon, and explicit derogatory remarks, This is so because a connection must be made to the actions and story line of the characters, for example, take for instance your high class, couple from beverly hills, or double bay you definatly will not see them carry on in such a manner, or use lanuage as explicit or offensive, the reason as to why they act so civilised is partly due to their easy upbringing and comfortable lifestyle, showing the everyday struggle in the lifestyles of the characters from the removilist draws the dividing lines that separate the uypper class from the lower class, thus highlighting their obscene behaviors, which is partly due to their working class lifestyle, and possible tough upbringing, which we can only assume based on what we see.

2.I definatly believe that all the characters in the play are stereotypes, because of the potrayal of the characters, the use of language and behavior seems to be at such an extreme, if almost exaggerated, however based on my first answer it is only fair to say that the author willaimson ahs taken advantage of the common stereotpye of the underclas australian, and the way they speak, because when you compare to the upper class, strait away a comparison is made, and stereotypes thougt up and drawn.

    3. I belive that willaimson has created the characters in the removalist to emphasize on the lifestyles of the australain , hanging on the common steroetyoe people have on australians, in order to make the story captivating, i mean writing about your average everyday Australian would be boring and the use of incorprating explicit lanugae and exhaggeration adds edge and humour to the story, thus makign it more interesting.

    4. ROSS: How about we shove a few extacy pills down his thought and make it look like he O.D’d we can say that he stumbled down the stairs whilst he was drugged, and thats how he copped his bruses, then when they do the examination of cause of death, they’ll see he was off his nut and well be “outta the shit”
if we need to we’ll put a bottle of bourben in his hand to make it look like he was drinking, or we’ll pour it down the sucka’s throat, we’ll say he was drinking and on drugs, we can stash some drugs in his house and it’ll look accidental on his account.

  3. 1) Williamson uses different type of language for each character. Kenny for example, uses many Australian slang and sexist language. Simmonds at the start of the book uses very formal language as a way to look good in front of the ladies, but later on in the book changes to very aggressive style of language. Both Kate and Fiona use formal language through out the book.

2)The characters in the book are very much each a stereo type. Each of them portrayed as the typical Australian back in that time. The drunk, bogan, husband as Kenny, the flirtatious constable, Simmonds, the snobby upper class female as Kate and the innocent by standers as Fiona, Ross and the removalist.

3)He created these characters to portray the lifestyles of a typical Australian in that time era. Many of which was slightly exaggerated to give the book a bit of an interesting blend and attract the eyes of readers.

  4. Q1. How does Williamson use language to create his characters? (look at and use the colloquialisms, slang, swearing and sexist language).?

Williamson expresses varoius types of style of talking about himself shows that he is a racial person who is one minded when it comes to women. He shows this through his novel (the removalist)and acts it out through his characters such as simmonds, kenny etc.

Q2. Are all the characters stereotypes?

Yes i agree that all the characters are stereotypes and this particular reenactment of a particular australian layed back life is only disscussing a porportion of our population.

Q3. Why has Williamson created the characters he has in The Removalists?

the reason why i believ that david williamson has done this is that each character describes and shows an particular personality of different particular people of varoius communities and lifestyles.

Q4. Challenge question: Imagine you are Ross. Write Ross’ defence of what he has done.?

Well i would say that a robber came into his place and stole all his furniture and before leaving they had gaven him a belting in that which this explanation will describe how his furniture was gone and how he hurt himself.

  5. HI Boys,

Just want to make sure that you respond with detail and you connect with each other on this. Please keep in mind that you need to respond with more detail or evidence, otehrwise, when it comes to the exam time, you will not get the marks you are expecting. Go all out in your responses and think critically. Also, please write and spell correctly. I can’t stress that enough and I will be upset if I do see any mistakes.
